MUSIC BRIDGE & UMBRELLA DRAIN
MUSIC BRIDGE & UMBRELLA DRAIN

Two proposals to Helsinki Music Centre public art competition (2009). In the first proposal, a pair of black staircases grace Helsinki Music Centre’s occasions. One rinses out outside world’s noise from the visitors’ ears, the other one expands Music Centre’s pulse to urban space. In the second proposal, a kitchy white rotunda jests with the higly formal surroundings. In the rotunda, water falls from black umbrellas, suspended at varying heights.

EQUESTRIAN PHOTOS
EQUESTRIAN PHOTOS

These images are attempts to capture the art of horsemanship and equine grace, essentially intangible things, with the means of photography.

PONITYTTÖJEN TAIDERÄJÄHDYS
PONITYTTÖJEN TAIDERÄJÄHDYS

Our working title was “What makes an adult woman cry on the back of a fat pony?” The exhibition covered different aspects of adults’ (non-competitive) riding hobby… timeless, ageless, humouristic episodes as well as more serious ambitions.

30-LOVE
30-LOVE

Bar Stool and Armchair are playing tennis. Suddenly the ball bounces off the court, and Armchair urges Bar Stool go fetch it. This seemingly insignificant incident escalates into a unpleasant lesson for Bar Stool. 30-LOVE is an animation of chairs, tennis, and friendship. Perspective, fundamental to 3D, is often simply abandoned.

PUSCHKIN & PETRONELLA
PUSCHKIN & PETRONELLA

“Pushkin and Petronella” aka “my first 3D”. Animation plot in a nutshell: Puschkin is a horse-headed man and Petronella a female centaur, who chases Puschkin – armed with a kyudo bow. I started my 3D-career boldly, making toroughly detailed, complicated models. Lesson learned: technical complexity may cause problems for novices. “KISS” would have been a good rule of thumb here too.

OLIO
OLIO

‘Olio’ is an interactive creature -something between a set decoration and a living actor. It was created to a childrens’ play tourneed by Espoo-based Totem-theatre. ‘Olio’ is a physical attempt to combine drama and interaction on the stage. The profile of the theatre emphasized the importance of the touch from the very beginning. Olio could be described as ‘a physical rival for the screen-mouse-interface’.

SOLDAT
SOLDAT

An experimental video – I learned a lot about the use of narrative elements. I combined Schönbergs ‘Verklärte Nacht’ and video footage from Matila&Röhr’s document ‘Underwater Iceland’ with a radio interview in which a German WW2 veteran tells about his experiences in Russian front. This excersise was done at a video edinting course led by a finnish editor Jukka Nykänen.

DOBJECT
DOBJECT

Meet the austere moderators Sanna, Mari and Satu. Not even the most obscure things make these stern women loose their focus. This piece was made in the ‘Interactive Cinema workshop’ led by Chris Hales. It was shot, edited and authored within 24 hours! The game is perhaps as thoughtful as the Rock-paper-scissors, meaning there is no clear winning option.

INSECT CITY
INSECT CITY

It asks You riddles as You proceed to point out objetcs in a weird insect-city, inhabited by many sinister species. Queer enough, doesn’t the city resemble Helsinki after an atomic bomb? Watch out,the piece can reveal surprising things!

THE HORSEY
THE HORSEY

Yes – I do like horses a lot. Horseback riding is fun, and, in a course context, a good theme around which to weave a small design and interaction experiment like this one. There’s something in the aesthetics of this nifty piece that does not stop delighting me – or maybe it’s indeed the use of old photographs and black and white material that make these views timeless. Anyways, these pictures make me smile every time!
