Urban design course work (1999)

Deliverables: boards with the plan, illustration, section, perspectives.

This is a town planning/urban design excercise done during the 3rd study year. The objective was to prepare a master plan for housing area. The area is Sundsberg at Kirkkonummi, a municipality in the Helsinki Metropolitan region, also planned and constructed in Real Life during the 2000s.

The most important lesson was understanding the scale of a housing area, plus how terrain and other local constraints impact the resulting street network and streetscape. The proposal is based on detached, semi-detached and terraced houses arranged on two main roads, leaving a free access to the river banks. A pedestrian bridge connects the two halves, with a vista to the fields.

Tools: Autocad + Photoshop, ton of cardboard.
